I love Saturdays. I love Saturdays when I have finished all my grading. I love Saturdays when I have finished all my grading and I get to actually be a home maker for the day.
When I have nothing to do, I bake. (I love to bake.) I love to make a mess and then beg Caleb to clean up after me. I tend to bake a LOT when I have no work to do. It is okay with me but I always have to remember that we two do not eat very much...so I am perfecting cutting recipes in half. Yesterday and today I have been conquering a beer bread recipe and it is AH-MAY-ZING. It is two of the best things in the world: beer. bread. I found the idea off of Pinterest (rant to come about that) and I love the simplicity of the recipe. I was told that you should not use light beer when making beer bread, but I've been using Coors Light and it is pretty tasty. Maybe it is because Coors Light is actually flavorful. :) If you want the recipe, I am putting it at the end of this blog post.
Now, Pinterest. HOLY COW. I love that website. Since I have been on, I have used at least 15 different things at home, in my classroom, for my hair, etc. It is like the best sharing idea since....I don't even know. I really am enjoying how I can find an idea, pin it, and then come and find it easily when I want to use/implement it. The recipes are the best so far but I did find the cutest bulletin board idea for my room. We have been studying verbs in class so I saw an "Angry Verbs" board...using characters from the game, Angry Birds. My class loves the game (and it is also our auction theme this year...haha) and so it was appropriate to make this board.
I am about to go upstairs and bring down a load of laundry to do, prepare lunch since Caleb will be home from basketball soon, and continue watching "Persuasion." I've been on a Jane Austen kick lately. :P I started to watch a really lame version of P&P where a modern girl gets sucked into the actual story line..but it was uncomfortable to watch and weird. So, I stopped.
Also, I don't remember if I said this in my last post (almost a month ago, SORRY!) but I am reading "The Hunger Games" to Caleb. He has really gotten into it and he has me read more than a chapter each night so he can find out what happens. We are just about halfway now so I think we are on a good track to finish before the movie comes out. I am quite excited for this film. Even Suzanne Collins, the author (MR. COLLINS!!??? Sorry, Austen again...), has given her stamp of approval.
I am going to put other random things as bullet points now:
**Finished the last book in the Eragon/Inheritance Cycle. SUPER lame ending. I was an unhappy fan.
**Hannah turned 21 yesterday. Holy Cow.
**Caleb is STILL loving grad school. His last course for this "year" started last week. He will be taking two courses through the summer and one in the fall, but he will take a break for the last 8 weeks before Christmas. That was too stressful this year.
**Our elementary part of school is missing 3 teachers (I am the only one left!) Our Kindergarten teacher had breast cancer and she had surgery, so she is out for 6 weeks. (She is doing great, tests are all coming back negative, and she is happy to have caught it so early!) Our 1st & 2nd grade teacher's husband had a heart attack last Sunday and he had to have quadruple by-pass surgery. He is also doing well and better, but we are not sure if Carla is coming back next week. Our 3rd grade teacher had to have neck surgery on her herniated disc and she will be out for 4-6 weeks.
**Wow. School is awesome. I made it through my first spelling bee too...with minimal controversy. :)
** Today is National Platypus Day, which means that Caleb and I will also be intermittently watching "Phineas and Ferb."
Here is the Beer Bread recipe.
This makes one loaf.
3 cups flour (1 bread, 2 regular/unbleached)
1 TBSP baking soda
2 TBSP brown sugar
1 TSP salt (4 turns of sea salt grinder)
2 TBSP honey (remember to line the spoon with oil so honey slips out)
1 12oz can/bottle of beer
4 TBSP butter
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a loaf pan. Whisk the first ingredients in medium bowl. Add honey and beer. Stir with wooden spoon. Melt butter in microwave ( I did power level 4 for 1:45). Pour half of butter on bottom of pan, pour in batter, and pour other half of butter on top. Bake for 53 minutes.
